Completely Burnt Down Ear

  • Completely Burnt Down Ear

Description of disability:

Burns of the head and neck can cause extreme disfiguration and gross functional disability with resultant social withdrawal and underperformance.  Deep burns of the ears can result in chondritis and resorption of a large part of the ear cartilage resulting in a crumpled ear.

Treatment:

A burnt ear is reconstructed by fashioning an ear framework and covering it with a delicate layer of fascia raised from the side of the head and covering it with a skin graft. At a later stage, a hole is made for an ear ring.

Post operative care:

Routine change of dressings at three days and suture removal at one week.
