Amniotic Band Syndrome

  • Amniotic Band Syndrome

Description of disability:

Amniotic band syndrome is an uncommon congenital disorder without any genetic or hereditary disposition.  It is a set of congenital malformations ranging from minor constriction rings and lymphedema of the digits to complex, bizarre multiple congenital anomalies that are attributed to amniotic bands that stick, entangle and disrupt fetal parts. It involves fetal entrapment in strands of amniotic tissue and causes an array of deletions and deformations. The constriction of appendages by amniotic bands may result in: constriction rings around the digits, arms and legs, swelling of the extremities distal to the point of constriction (congenital lymphedema), amputation of digits, arms and legs (congenital amputation).

Treatment:

Primary treatment is plastic and reconstructive surgery after birth with in utero fetal surgery also coming in vogue.

Post operative care:

Rest, immobilization and elevation of the part is the usual postoperative care.
